Healthy long hair is low maintenance and simple. One of the best things you can do for your hair is a hair detox to remove product buildup and hard water buildup.

Over time, hair product buildup leads to dry hair, which turns to breakage.

The internet needs to improve hair care information. It’s overcomplicated. I’m here to help you reach your best hair and simplify your hair care routine. I may not know you, but I care. I care because I was in your shoes once. I dreamed of the hair I have now for years. I know how much hair means to us and the confidence it gives.

Healthy hair doesn’t come in a bottle. Healthy hair is pre-damaged. Hair is dead cells, so once your hair is damaged, you can’t heal it with products. Products can coat the damage and help you keep your length, but they can’t reverse it.

Let’s cover all about a hair detox.

How-To

There are two ways to do a hair detox. One thing I recommend after a hair detox is a hair mask to deep condition hair that has been clarified and may feel a little naked. It’s also my favorite way to test how good a hair mask is. 

  1. A natural DIY way to detox your hair is with diluted apple cider vinegar (i)
  2. The easier route—is hair detox shampoo, also known as hair clarifying shampoos.

There are so many clarifying shampoos on the shelves. There are even more coming out every day I walk down the hair section at stores. The good news is I’ve tested my fair share and have a few that I recommend.

  • Ouai Detox Shampoo -This is great for most hair types. It can take a second wash day before your hair feels its softest.

  • Nexxus Clean & Pure Clarifying Shampoo– This one is another excellent detox shampoo that leaves my hair feeling clean and free of buildup without leaving it dry like others that have given me a bad hair week.

  • Malibu C Hard Water Wellness- Probably the best one I’ve tried. This shampoo is a hard water shampoo, and as it removes mineral buildup, it also removes product buildup. It’s like a detox shampoo, just labeled for hard water.

  • Biolage Clean Reset- This one is great for those with finer hair who have tried other stronger hair detox shampoos that didn’t go well. It’s almost like a regular shampoo that cleans your hair.

How Often

Your hair will have different needs than mine. Our lifestyles and weather aren’t the same. Depending on how often you wash, a safe rule of thumb is a hair detox every two weeks. Try tracking this in a journal so you can stay consistent. I know I have to, or I forget when my last hair detox was.

Results

I get so many raving comments on socials after someone does a hair detox. They can’t believe how soft their hair is. The crazy part is how many people look for this softness in a hair mask, piling product on top of dry hair with buildup. The answer is to remove the product buildup first!
