This comparison is my unbiased review of the Shark FlexStyle and Dyson Airwrap. I have purchased both and was excited about the Shark FlexStyle savings because the Dyson is going for $599. I love the Dyson Airwrap, and I believe it’s 100% worth it. It’s much better than direct heat from flat irons or curling wands. I use it 2-3 times per week. Let’s see how these two hair tools compare.
Shark FlexStyle
Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler
Size
The Dyson is just the perfect size for my hand. Any bigger, and it wouldn’t feel so comfortable to hold. The Shark FlexStyler is slightly bigger in circumference than the Dyson. I’m petite, 5’1, with small hands. I also have thick and very long hair, so I use a hair tool longer than most.
I didn’t notice the discomfort with the Shark FlexStyle in styling my hair with the barrels. It was until I used the round brush. The hand movement and passes I needed to smoothen my hair made it tiresome and felt unnatural. The length of the overall handle is long and with the attachments added the weight distribution was off.
Winner: Dyson Airwrap is more comfortable to hold
Noise
I tested the Shark FlexStyle and the Dyson Airwrap during a LIVE video stream on Instagram. The votes came in, and everyone voted the Shark FlexStyle is louder. Both are loud, and I often do my hair on LIVE with the Dyson, but the SharkStyle is louder. This overtime adds up to cost savings. Is it worth saving the $320, or is it best to save to invest in the Dyson? Let’s keep comparing.

Hair feel
The Dyson Airwrap leaves my hair bouncy, smooth, and not dry, as if I used too high of a heat setting. I use the highest heat for my coarse hair. The Shark FlexStyle left my hair bouncy, too, and It feels like it distributes heat, similar to the Dyson Airwrap; however, the hair felt slightly drier when I used the highest heat setting like I do with the Dyson.
Since the heat is higher on the Shark I prefer the mid heat setting. It feels as though the cuticle is smoother with the Dyson. I’m unsure if it depends on the material/coating difference from the curling barrels. The Dyson barrels are of higher quality and smoother to the touch.
The Hold
The curls from the Dyson and the Shark FlexStyle fall into waves after a few hours. The hold was similar. The curls fall into softer waves. I use the cool blast to set the curls because I don’t pin the curls. I have a lot of hair, and I’m a toddler momma.
Settings
Both have three heat settings, a cold blast, and three airflow speeds. The setting for the Dyson requires you to hold the button upwards, making it a little uncomfortable on the thumb and the Shark FlexStyle is a button you press down. Always use a good heat protector.
Winner: It’s a tie
Attachments
I love that Shark offers options to choose three attachments. The Dyson doesn’t offer a diffuser attachment which is a bummer to have to buy their $429 Supersonic for it. The attachments of the Dyson feel better in quality.
The barrels:
Similar in sizing and performance. The Dyson is smoother and leaves fewer rivets on the hair. The Dyson barrel lines curve versus the straight lines on the Shark. I’m not sure if this causes the rivets or if I was using too high of heat the first few times.
The round brush:
The Shark has long and short mixed bristles like the Revlon brush, it’s nice for my thick hair. There’s 3 brush attachments that come with the Dyson. The Shark brush attachments is a little too big for the twisting to dry and smoothen your hair. It left my hair a little dry and frizzy for an event.
The diffuser:
The Shark FlexStyle diffuser is amazing! I loved it and the cupping and size is perfect for long thick hair.
Winner: Dyson attachments are superior quality
Bottom Line
The good news is that both are better heat styling options versus direct heat hair tools for styling. This benefit gives you more heat use for less damage! Shark offers more options to customize your attachments for your hair needs. I love that they don’t stack costs for a big carrying case like the Dyson. They can always sell storage options like these on Amazon to hold the attachments. I would love for Dyson to start offering to choose the attachments we need and to opt out of the case to make it more affordable.
Overall the Dyson is the winner and the best investment for your hair. The Shark FlexStyle is a good option if you have shorter hair that takes less styling time.
If the new Dyson price of $599 is out of the question, there are used ones for sale at a discount on Offer Up or eBay.
